**These companies are either not currently accepting new providers on their panels or are behind on their credentialing process for new physicians because of the Change Healthcare Data Breach in February 2024.  However, we hope to eventually be in-network with these insurances.  Again, please call the office at (720) 778-DERM (3376) for the most current information

What is the Change Healthcare Data Breach and why should I care?

Change Healthcare, part of UnitedHealthGroup, is one of the largest health payment processing companies in the world. It acts as a clearing house for 15 billion medical claims each year, which is nearly 40% of all claims.  On February 21, 2024, there was a cyberattack on Change Healthcare’s computer systems that necessitated shutting down all communications.  This created a backlog of unpaid claims and exposed millions of patients’ personal health information to the dark web.  It also disrupted cashflow for many medical offices and hospitals, and as a short-term solution, Change Healthcare started paying any and all claims.  Several months later, the cyber ransom has been paid and the computer systems are back online, but there is a gigantic financial mess to sort out between unpaid claims, mis-paid claims, fraudulent claims, lost claims, etc.  And that doesn’t even begin to deal with the sensitive information that was leaked for “a substantial portion of Americans” (UnitedHealthGroup CEO Andrew Witty).

For a new practice, this means that many insurance companies that use(d) Change Healthcare are not anxious to take on new providers when they can’t even process the claims for the ones they have.  It’s going to take time before the fallout from this cyberattack calms.

For patients, this means that you should make sure that your information was not part of the leak.  If your information may have been compromised, you are entitled to free credit monitoring and help with identity theft protection.  See the links below.
