Meet Dr. S. Alison Basak

Fellowship-Trained, Double-Board Certified Dermatologist in Denver

Dr. S. Alison Basak, Dermatologist in Denver, CO.

Dr. S. Alison Basak is a fellowship-trained, double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who completed additional intensive training in skin cancer surgery and advanced facial plastic reconstruction beyond residency.  Her professional interests include medical dermatology, aesthetic skin enhancement, skin cancer detection and treatment, and bettering the patient experience in today’s increasingly-difficult healthcare environment.  She strives to treat each patient with compassion and respect, just as she would want her own family members to be treated.

Education

Dr. Basak earned her medical degree at Washington University in St Louis, where she also garnered a master’s degree in biomedical sciences studying neuroimmunology.  Additionally, Dr. Basak lived in Lima, Peru for a year as part of a joint Johns Hopkins University/Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia research team studying the role of bacteria in Peru’s high incidence of stomach cancer.  She published several peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and presented her research internationally.  As an undergraduate, she dual-majored in Spanish literature and biology at Washington University in St Louis.

Professional Experience

Dr. Basak completed her dermatology residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where she was blessed to have strong clinical, cosmetic, and surgical mentors that laid the foundation for a strong clinical, cosmetic, and surgical career.  Following residency, she completed a fellowship for Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology at the University of Missouri in Columbia under the auspices of Dr. Nicholas Golda.  While there, she trained under dermatologic, ENT, and plastic surgeons to learn the advanced facial reconstruction techniques required following cancer removal.  Dr. Basak feels immense professional and personal satisfaction to be able to remove cancers and provide aesthetic reconstructions for her patients.  She has published novel reconstructions, lectured reconstructive surgeons nationally in the field of cutaneous oncology and plastic surgery, co-authored a book for dermatologic surgeons, and been involved in clinical studies, such as those for gene expression profile testing of melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma to identify the tumors that are more likely to be aggressive.

Personal Life

Outside of work, Dr. Basak appreciates being with her husband, an equally busy fellow physician.  They love to travel (far and near), attend concerts (all kinds), and take advantage of the beautiful Rocky Mountains (skiing, hiking, rock hunting, driving).  Dr. Basak has played the violin all of her life, loves to read (Terry Pratchett is a favorite), and builds dollhouses in her spare time.  She has two awesome kitty cats and four amazing nieces and nephews that are being indoctrinated early in sun protection.
